Grand Theft Auto IV (2008 - PC, PS3, XBOX)

Synopsis:

As we had presented in class, the Grand Theft Auto Series covers a slew of different parodies of food and American culture. Cluckin’ Bell (GTA San Andreas, GTA IV, GTA V)

The game goes in depth with the storyline behind the fast food chain. According to the games Wiki page, it is a parody of KFC, Taco Bell, Popeye’s and Chic-fil-a. The game also has developed in depth commercials that the player of the game might run into.

Cluckin' Bell:

The Cluckin’ Bell commercial parodies issues that are common to the fast food industry such as health issues, obesity, animal cruelty and fast food product quality.

In the game, the player can enter this establishment and buy food for exchange in money. A basic meal with a burger and fries are about $3, while a salad is about $10 dollars, which reflects real food prices. A common criticism we had discussed in class was how healthy foods typically cost more than less healthy foods.

Burger Shot:

Casey and I found it interesting that Burger Shot (GTA Vice City, San Andreas, IV, V) is a parody of Burger King and Hardee’s because of the logo design and boasts the slogan, “Die with a smile on your face!” Burger Shot also pokes fun at health issues, obesity, animal cruelty and the criticism of fast food quality.

In GTA San Andreas and Vice City, eating at Burger Shot can replenish your health, much similar to the concept of eating food for health replenishment that was discussed in the section about Crash Bandicoot. The game also utilizes commercials with Burger Shot too. They parody the stereotype about how American culture is known for overeating and portion control and how that links to our high obesity rates and high stroke rates.

In GTA San Andreas, if your character eats too much fatty foods they will gain weight which will decrease the attractiveness ratings of the character, making him less likely to get a girlfriend. Salad options are available at Burger Shot in GTA San Andreas.

In Grand Theft Auto IV, the player is only allowed to purchase a $1 "Bleeder" meal, as seen in the series of Burger Shot advertisements below.
