Garlic bread has been on the menu of American restaurants and dinner plates since the mid 19th century. Most of us enjoy garlic bread with lasagna or spaghetti but this mouth watering recipe is great simply as a snack. After the first bit of this bread you will immediately stop buying pre-made/manufactured garlic breads from the store. I borrowed the recipe from Food Network with Rachel Ray and have made some adjustments to accommodate my taste. This recipe is a little more costly if you choose to make cheesy garlic bread but is worth the money when you take your first bite. Sometimes when you prepare recipes from scratch the cost tends to be more but the flavors you are able to obtain is like no other. I know this recipe is saturated in butter and is not the healthiest option. You can always substitute the butter with a spread of lower calories and hold the cheese. This recipe is simple and easy to make and requires only a few ingredients.
1 loaf of French bread (or your favorite- Ciabatta, baguette ect.)
1 stick of real butter (or Olivio spreadable butter as a healthier option)
3 cloves of garlic
Mozzarella cheese (optional)
3 dashes of parsley flakes.
Remember: if you are substituting butter make sure you choose an option with no Tran’s fats. If your choice includes Hydrogenated soybean oil it’s not any healthier than using butter.
Remove the skin off 3 garlic cloves and cut them in half. Add the cloves to butter and heat using a small saucepan or in a microwave safe bowl. This will take about 3-5 minutes using a saucepan or about 1-1 ½ minutes if using a microwave. Cut your bread down the middle basting both pieces with the melted butter. The garlic flavor has been infused in the butter so there is no need to add the garlic cloves to bread, simply discard the cloves after you have applied the butter. At this point you can add 6 slices of mozzarella cheese if you like cheesy garlic bread. I prefer real mozzarella cheese which is about $5-6 dollars but you can easily make this bread using Kraft slice or block cheese for about half the price. Shake a few sprinkles of parsley flakes on top of the cheese and broil in the oven for 6-10 minutes at 350 degrees. The cooking times will vary depending on your oven so keep a close eye on your bread. Because you are using the broiler it will cook quickly so when your cheese is hot and melted your bread is done. Cut into 1 inch slices and enjoy!!
